Silent Book Club at SEAMK Library

Welcome to read together at SEAMK Library’s Tapio-sali on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 4–5 pm!

Silent Book Club is a quiet reading group where people gather to read their own books in peace and without discussion. Tapio-sali offers comfortable sofas and armchairs where you can sit back among soft cushions and enjoy your reading.

Bring your own book or choose something to read from the library’s collection — you might discover something completely new. Some sweet treats will also be available.

The week celebrates books and reading

April 23 is World Book Day, which has been celebrated around the world since the 1920s. A Catalan bookseller created the day to commemorate Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare, who both died on the same day in 1616. According to tradition, men give roses to women and women give books to men. In 1995, UNESCO designated the day as World Book and Copyright Day. UNESCO believes that books deserve their own day as symbols of freedom, solidarity, and peace. The aim is to encourage people to take an interest in reading and to appreciate authors and their work.

During the same week, April 20–26, 2026, the Finnish Reading Center (Lukukeskus) celebrates Reading Week. This year’s theme, Reading Is a Celebration!, highlights that reading and literacy are sources of joy and a privilege. It is never too late to learn to enjoy reading!
